Before doing anything, always check transmission fluid or gear oil level first.

IF YOU FIND THAT YOU HAVE TO DO A CLUTCH JOB, ALWAYS RESURFACE YOUR FLYWHEEL AND REPLACE YOUR PILOT BEARING OR PILOT BUSHING IN THE BACK OF THE ENGINE.

1 When you push the clutch pedal in, you now apply the throw out bearing against the pressure plate. Now the input shaft of your transmission is suppose to slow down and then stop turning. If your throw out bearing is worn out it can make noise. I recommend you take a good look at your throw out bearing, pilot bearing or bushing,  depending on which style pilot bearing or bushing you have.

2  When you let the clutch pedal out in neutral, the front shaft of the transmission starts turning. This also makes your front transmission input bearing and cluster bearings work (start turning). Unfortunately with this symptom you usually need a transmission. Make sure your transmission is full of lube.

3a-b  Bare with me on this one! With this symptom you always want to see if your clutch pedal has a full range of motion. This symptom can be caused by a number of different things. 

First, see if the clutch operates from a cable or hydraulics. If it hydraulic see if the master clutch reservoir is full. The reservoir is located under the hood and usually toward the firewall on the driver's side. Most take type dot three brake fluid. 

If your clutch is operated by a cable, check and see if the cable appears to have stretched. No matter what type of cable system you have, always see if there is a adjustment. This will be located at the transmission or under the dash. 

If all checks out, then check the back firewall where the clutch master mounts. Sometimes this area cracks and flexes, bending back and forth when you depress the clutch, causing a shortened clutch pedal motion. This happens a lot on Toyota and Ford trucks. 

Sorry to keep you reading here, but we want to find this problem right? Now, if you still haven't found the problem, you should check the top cover bushings. Toyota and Ford vehicles often have a problem in this area. If they are good, then pull the transmission out and check your clutch parts and throw out and pilot bearings. By taking things one at a time and you might save yourself some money.

4  If your engine starts, but your car won't move when you let out the clutch, check the differential and drive shaft first. Also, make sure the shifter is hooked up. If those items are fine, then check your clutch parts. The clutch disk often wears until it is too thin to move the vehicle. This happens all the time.

5  If your transmission pops out of gears, check the top cover bushing in the shifter area and the motor mounts. If the motor mounts are loose or broken the engine and transmission can jump around, knocking the transmission out of gear.  Also, check linkage rods or linkage cables to make sure they are in adjustment. 

If you find that the top cover bushings for your transmission are bad, the dealer sells them separately. As a last resort, you should check the transmission shift forks, sliding sleeves and gears for wear and taper.

6  If you own a 4 wheel drive vehicle and it will not move, you need to check the differentials, drive shafts and transfer case.  Sometimes, if the transfer case is your problem, you can shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive. If you car moves in one selection but not the other, this tips you off that it is probably the transfer case.

 Worn out clutch parts are also a very common problem.

7  If you own a front wheel drive vehicle and it won't move always check the axles first. Then check the clutch parts and transaxle last. The clutch disc's often wear too thin to pull the car.

 Also, some front wheel drive transmissions (transaxles) have a differential that is separate from the transmission. Subaru comes to mind, so be careful, it might be the differential not the transmission.

8  Most vibrations should be checked by a experienced mechanic, but this type of vibration is most commonly a universal joint that is coming apart or seizing up. 

I recommend you check the u-joints first. If you are driving a front wheel drive vehicle, then check the axles to see if they are coming apart.

9  I am sorry, but I had to add this one because it is so common. Make sure  the transmission is full of gear oil or fluid first. Unfortunately, if your transmission is full of lube, this one is easy, 99.9% of the time you need to rebuild your transmission. 

Hopefully it will only be the bearings!

10  This one is a little different,  but very important.  This is a good transmission, except the dealer put three rubber plugs in the back of the top shifter cover. After a short period of time they will leak. Often to the point where the transmission gears melt. 

Now just pull those rubber plugs out of there and tap in 5/8 freeze plugs. Now make sure your transmission is full of lube, and your transmission should live a lot longer. Just think, you can spend your $950.00 to $1350.00 on something else now.
